Day 13 of the 50 Day Spiritual Adventure

Today I'm reading Ezra 8:21-32, especially verse 31, "The hand of our God was on us, and he protected us from enemies and bandits along the way."

It took a lifetime for Ezra to see his dream fulfilled - returning the people of Israel back to their homeland from exile in Babylon.

I love the way Ezra's struggles are so real. He told the King they didn't need soldiers or horsemen to guard them on their journey through the bad lands back to Jerusalem. The route was a favorite hunting ground for bandits and worse. He boldly proclaimed his confidence in God before the King. But we get a glimpse of his private thoughts. Like maybe he should have accepted the offer of military protection. Like maybe this whole prayer thing was going a bit too far. It's refreshing to see that his confidence in God wasn't always 100%. He had some doubt thrown in, but he went forward anyway. And he trusted.

We can start off confident - and then waver - and then regain our footing. God understands our weaknesses. But leaders like Ezra have a greater responsibility to do it right, even when the storm clouds look threatening and the trail looks long and foreboding.

Like football coaching legend Lou Holtz used to say: "“Don’t tell me how rocky the sea is, just bring the darn ship in!”

Trust in God's protection today.
