Four Words Each Day 2

Today I’m reading Proverbs 30:18-19 “There are three things that amaze me—no, four things that I don’t understand: how an eagle glides through the sky, how a snake slithers on a rock, how a ship navigates the ocean, how a man and a woman fall in love.”

This week I’m reflecting on four word phrases that come from Patti Digh’s book “four word self help”. She attempts to boil life down to simple action phrases so you can put into motion the desires of your heart. I like her emphasis on action words; otherwise people just spin and spin and never really get anywhere.

So, on relationships, she says:

“Walk hand in hand.” (a good one for couples and parents)

“Show up, be real.” (if the other person isn’t being real love can’t survive. If you’re not being real then forget it.)

“Be someone else’s lighthouse.” (love seeks the other person’s best)

“Let yourself be beloved.” (‘beloved’ is such a great word. Do you know you are God’s ‘beloved?' If not, it's hard to really experience love from other people)

“Let yourself be hurt.” (Ouch, that’s a tough one – but true. You have to let people get close enough to hurt you)

“Embrace solitude, not loneliness.” (Lots of people settle for bad relationships because they are afraid to be alone with themselves. Love yourself – that’s what Jesus said because then you begin to understand how to love your neighbor)

“Write more letters.” (so much better than email)

“Give someone your password.” (the password to your heart, not just your computer. Do you let people in?)

Really, not a bad list when it comes to relationships. There’s nothing more complicated than trying to figure our the nuances of human love. It can go wrong in an infinite number of ways. That’s why Solomon found love to be so difficult to understand, and yet he wrote the book on love in the Bible (Song of Solomon). So, it takes energy, creativity, endurance and commitment. Nothing that important happens without significant, regular investment.

Know any good four word phrases about relationships? Add them to the comments.

Today’s prayer:

Dear Father, let me not pray to be sheltered from dangers

but to be fearless in facing them.

Let me not beg for the stilling of my struggles

but for the heart to conquer them.

Let me not feel alone in life's battlefield

but find strength in others and in You.

Let me not cave in to anxious fears

but hope for the patience that guides me to freedom.

Let me know that I am Your beloved, the one for whom Christ died.

And as I walk through this day

let me feel the grasp of my hand in Yours. Amen.

Your 4 words to repeat throughout the day: "I am God's beloved."
